The Parent's Role in Athletics
Before the First Game
Parents, ask yourself the following questions:
- Do you want them to play? If so, why?
- What will be a successful season for you as a parent?
- What are your goals for them?
- What do you hope they gain from the experience?
- What do you think their role will be on this team?
Then ask your child the following questions and just listen without talking.
- Why are you playing?
- What is a successful season?
- What goals do you have?
- What do you think your role will be on the team?
Release the athlete - Trusting the experience to them:
- Sharing in the credit
- Solving all the problems
- Continue to coach them
- Being critical of officials
- Excuses
- Avoidance
Remember these facts:
- 95% of kids play sports for the fun, joy and love of the game.
- 70% of all young people are done competing in a team sport activity by age 12.
- There are 100 academic scholarships, given to every 1 athletic one.
Meet their needs, not yours.
During the Game
- Be there
- Model appropriate behavior
- Focus on the team
- One instructional voice
- Four Roles - choose one - Coach - Athlete - Referee - Spectator
After the Game
- Time and Space to recover
- More approval than advice
- Save your analysis
- Let them bring the game to you
- Value not tied to performance
- Be a confidence builder
Be the Parent your Child can be Proud of! Let's Have a Great Season!

Concessions
The concessions we sell at our home games (held at Roncalli High School) are instrumental in helping us here, at Roncalli Middle School, provide the resources neccesary for the excellent athletic program we do have. As part of having a child participate in sports, we ask that you make time to help when you are scheduled. If you are not able to make it we also ask that you find a replacement.
